First of all, these dogs are considered to be balanced in their medium size but, despite this, these dogs were bred to be fast, due to this fact German pointers have powerful and strong legs that allow them to run quickly and, due to this fact, be great hunters. German pointers are perfect in hunting in the wilderness. Besides this, some other important features such as weather resistance, wiry coat, water repellency have been formed. The outer coat prevents from punishment of rough cover. The undercoat is dense within winter months and it gets thinner during the spring. The usual color of the body is liver and white while the ears and head are brown. The tail of German pointers is usually docked to two-fifths of their natural length. These dogs have eyebrows and beard of medium length and they are of straight and strong hair.
Having described this breed from the physical characteristics point of view, let’s discuss the character of German Pointers. Despite the fact that their main duty is hunting, these dogs have the mind of their own. If to be more specific, German Pointers can be distracted from their work by the variety of things such as sounds and smells, and even sights. On the other hand, these dogs are intelligent and friendly that helps them to strike the right note with their masters, these dogs are very affectionate to their owners and sometimes they even start to be jealous. German pointers are the dogs with strong instincts and their most famous activity is go hunting with their owners. They are outer-directed with those people they know, but German pointers are vigilant with the strangers.
Also I would like to highlight that such dogs are extremely energetic and powerful. That’s why it is necessary to make some exercises with them every day, otherwise the dog can become bored, because it cannot handle with staying alone for a long time. What is more, if their energy is not exhausted in the right way, the dog can display some bad habits such as destroying furniture.
As regards their behavior with children, we can say that German pointers are very loyal and gentle. But such dogs do their best to older and considerate children. They can be not only dogs for hunting, but also mannerly house dogs because they are faithful friends for children and they need companionship.
