Who is this breed suited to?

A Bombay may suit someone seeking an affectionate companion enjoying play and contact. Its black, glossy appearance was developed from domestic breeds; the miniature-panther comparison describes looks rather than wild ancestry.

Daily time commitment

Offer daily games and opportunities to join household activity, followed by comfortable places to settle near people. Introduce visitors and other animals at the individual cat's pace despite the breed's outgoing reputation.

Coat and everyday care

The very short coat usually needs only occasional gentle rubber brushing to remove loose hair. Some individuals have watery eyes; discuss persistent tearing with your vet rather than assuming it is cosmetic.

Challenges to plan for

Strong interest in company may become inconvenient if you prefer a pet that keeps its distance. A sociable reputation also does not establish compatibility with every child or dog.

How does it compare?

The Burmese is a useful comparison because it contributed to Bombay development. Both often enjoy close interaction, while the Bombay's glossy black coat distinguishes it from the Burmese colors described by CFA.

Questions to ask a breeder

Ask about heart screening in the breeding cats, any recurrent eye problems and the family's health history. Discuss how kittens meet people, how long they have been living in a home environment and what follow-up support is offered.
