also called the Tosa Inu

Who is this breed suited to?

A Tosa requires an experienced owner able to handle a large, powerful dog and organise safe introductions and secure management.

Daily time commitment

UKC prescribes no daily exercise quota. Discuss appropriate movement and conditioning for the individual, adding calm lead and handling practice.

Coat and everyday care

The short coat allows straightforward inspection; teach relaxed examination of feet, face and loose throat skin while the puppy is small.

Challenges to plan for

A stately manner does not remove strength or the implications of its fighting-dog history. Evaluate interactions individually and avoid uncontrolled group play.

How does it compare?

The Shikoku contributed to its development, but later crosses produced a far larger mastiff-type dog with very different handling demands.

Questions to ask a breeder

How do adults behave around unfamiliar dogs, what health assessments are documented, and how are puppies selected for experienced homes?
