A giant Swiss Alpine rescue breed famous for locating and aiding travelers stranded in mountain snow.

Who is this breed suited to?

A St Bernard needs a home with physical space, transport capacity and an owner able to manage a giant dog comfortably.

Daily time commitment

RKC gives up to an hour of adult exercise. Keep additional time for grooming and careful handling; puppy activity should develop progressively.

Coat and everyday care

Both smooth and long coats occur. Brush several times weekly and ask for a realistic washing, drying and household-cleanup demonstration.

Challenges to plan for

Large size changes ordinary tasks such as lifting an injured dog or visiting a clinic. Plan these logistics before purchasing a puppy.

How does it compare?

The Newfoundland is another very large working companion, but the St Bernard's Alpine rescue history and coat varieties are distinct.

Questions to ask a breeder

Which coat type is expected, what adult sizes occur in the family, and what screening and growth guidance will you provide?
