Who is this breed suited to?
The Saarloos suits an experienced household able to respect reserve and independence; appearance alone is a poor reason to choose it.
Daily time commitment
The FCI gives no daily minute target. Allow unhurried walks, gradual exposure and patient relationship-building, with safe space to retreat.
Coat and everyday care
Maintain the substantial coat with regular hands-on checks introduced gently; predictable grooming is preferable to forced close contact.
Challenges to plan for
The standard describes avoidance of unfamiliar situations. Busy social settings and expectations of automatic obedience can be a poor match.
How does it compare?
The German Shepherd contributed to its development, but the Saarloos standard explicitly says the resulting breed is not a conventional working dog.
