Norfolk Spaniel or Shropshire Spaniel

Who is this breed suited to?

Norfolk Spaniel is a historical spaniel designation, not a separate modern breed to select from a breeder. The RKC connects the name with the English Springer's history.

Daily time commitment

Daily activity advice should be taken from the actual living spaniel's breed and line. A historical Norfolk label provides no separate exercise benchmark.

Coat and everyday care

Old illustrations and descriptions cannot establish a distinct current care regime. Grooming and health records must relate to the modern dog actually being considered.

Challenges to plan for

Historical breed boundaries were different from today's. Do not confuse this old spaniel name with the living Norfolk Terrier or assume a surviving separate pedigree.

How does it compare?

The English Springer Spaniel is the useful modern comparison: the RKC says the breed was at one stage called the Norfolk Spaniel.

Questions to ask a breeder

Ask which present-day breed and registry a dog belongs to. Documentation should clarify any historical name rather than market it as a newly discovered rare spaniel.
