An energetic gundog bred to flush and "spring" game birds into the air for hunters.

Who is this breed suited to?

An English Springer is appropriate for people who want to work with an energetic flushing gundog, rather than simply admire spaniel ears.

Daily time commitment

Expect a substantial daily commitment: RKC lists over two hours of adult exercise. Mix searching, retrieves and calm settling exercises.

Coat and everyday care

Comb the feathering more than once weekly and check ears and feet after undergrowth; field outings can bring home burrs and mud.

Challenges to plan for

Flushing enthusiasm can become chasing without training. Ask about working versus show ancestry and judge the individual family's activity level.

How does it compare?

A Field Spaniel shares land-spaniel ancestry but has its own history and outline; the Springer is especially associated with active flushing work.

Questions to ask a breeder

What do the parents do on an ordinary day? How are your Springer puppies introduced to recall, grooming, household sounds and settling after excitement?
