A tall, curly-coated Irish gundog with a distinctive "rat tail," bred to retrieve waterfowl in cold water.

Who is this breed suited to?

Choose this curly-coated water retriever if you enjoy active gundog work and will learn the coat routine as carefully as the training.

Daily time commitment

The RKC places adult exercise above two hours daily. Use retrieving and scenting games with safe, supervised water access where appropriate.

Coat and everyday care

Comb the curls more than once weekly and inspect the coat after swimming; give ears and dense hair time to dry.

Challenges to plan for

The spaniel name can mislead: its working role is retrieving, particularly from water. Water enthusiasm never replaces assessment of currents or safe entry.

How does it compare?

The Curly-Coated Retriever offers another curly water-working comparison, but the Irish Water Spaniel's topknot and characteristic tail set its outline apart.

Questions to ask a breeder

Can you demonstrate curl maintenance after swimming? What retrieving work, health screening and gradual water introductions do your dogs and puppies receive?
