A Swedish scent hound developed by crossing German and Swiss hounds, bred to hunt fox and hare.

Who is this breed suited to?

The Hamiltonstovare suits an active hound enthusiast who can provide secure exercise and appreciate a dog developed for independent small-game tracking.

Daily time commitment

RKC places adults above two hours of daily exercise. Build substantial scent-oriented outings into the routine and practise returning attention to the handler.

Coat and everyday care

The short coat needs a weekly brush; check paws, skin and ears after long woodland walks.

Challenges to plan for

Unlike a pack Foxhound, the Hamilton traditionally hunts singly. Its clear trail voice and perseverance require realistic planning around neighbours and wildlife.

How does it compare?

The English Foxhound helped form this Swedish hound, but the Hamilton's individual hunting role is an important distinction from pack work.

Questions to ask a breeder

Do your Hamiltonstovares work independently or live mainly as companions? What recall, household and handling experience will the puppy have, and which health checks are documented?
