The Rastreador Brasileiro, or Brazilian Tracker, is a living Brazilian scenthound developed for hunting. After a severe population setback in the twentieth century, a recovery programme resumed breeding; it should not be described as an extinct breed.

Who is this breed suited to?

The Brazilian Tracker suits a person prepared for a large hunting scenthound, with suitable space and structured opportunities to use its nose.

Daily time commitment

Plan active walks and controlled trails around the individual. The standard describes stamina and hunting methods, not a fixed daily duration.

Coat and everyday care

Its smooth coat still needs inspection after vegetation; make checking the long ears and feet an easy, familiar routine.

Challenges to plan for

The breed's serious historical population setback does not mean it is extinct today: the FCI account describes resumed breeding and recovery.

How does it compare?

The American Foxhound contributed to its development, but the Rastreador was selected in Brazilian conditions and has its own standard.

Questions to ask a breeder

Can you explain the documented pedigree, parents' hunting and household routines, health assessments and the recovery programme behind this line?
