Who is this breed suited to?
The Rafeiro suits an owner prepared for a large Portuguese livestock and property guardian with carefully controlled boundaries.
Daily time commitment
The standard does not give daily minutes. Schedule walking, handling, contact with people and checks of the area it guards.
Coat and everyday care
Learn maintenance of the family's thick coat and inspect feet and skin after outdoor patrols; introduce cooperative examination before maturity.
Challenges to plan for
Guarding, especially around a defined territory, requires management of arrivals. Acreage without secure fencing is not a complete ownership plan.
How does it compare?
The Spanish Mastiff is a relevant Iberian livestock-guardian comparison, but the Rafeiro has its own Portuguese working history and standard.
Questions to ask a breeder
What role do your adults perform, how are visitors admitted, and what health screening and puppy-placement criteria do you use?
