A giant Spanish livestock guardian breed from the Pyrenees, bred to protect flocks from wolves and bears.

Who is this breed suited to?

This powerful flock guardian needs an owner with room, handling capacity and a deliberate plan for visitors, boundaries and livestock.

Daily time commitment

RKC suggests up to an hour of adult exercise, plus daily coat work. Include calm lead practice and routine boundary checks.

Coat and everyday care

Work through the thick, coarse coat daily and prepare space for washing and drying a very large dog after wet outings.

Challenges to plan for

A calm demeanour does not cancel a guardian's purpose. Manage access to the property rather than expecting the dog to judge every visitor.

How does it compare?

The Pyrenean Shepherd is a much smaller flock mover; the Mastiff protected stock. Shared geography does not imply interchangeable jobs.

Questions to ask a breeder

Can I observe the parents' visitor routine, review screening records and see how puppies learn handling appropriate to their future adult size?
