A small, spaniel-like Dutch breed historically used to lure ducks into traps with its plumed white-tipped tail.

Who is this breed suited to?

The Kooikerhondje can suit an engaged owner who enjoys training a small sporting companion and understands its specialised duck-decoy background.

Daily time commitment

RKC suggests up to an hour of adult exercise. Include searching and cooperative games without assuming a small dog needs only indoor play.

Coat and everyday care

Comb the medium coat and feathering several times weekly, especially around ears, tail and legs after damp walks.

Challenges to plan for

Its original work lured ducks into traps rather than retrieving shot birds. Choose activities for the individual instead of assuming all orange-and-white dogs work alike.

How does it compare?

The Nova Scotia Duck-Tolling Retriever also has a luring association, but its retrieving role and Canadian development make it a different breed.

Questions to ask a breeder

What do your Kooikers enjoy doing, and how do they respond to handling and strangers? Can you show parental health results and puppy socialisation records?
