A bold Finnish hunting breed bred to hold large game such as bear and moose at bay until hunters arrived.

Who is this breed suited to?

The Karelian Bear Dog is best suited to an experienced owner able to support an independent big-game hunting spitz with secure outlets.

Daily time commitment

Plan daily purposeful outdoor activity and scent work, plus practice returning attention to the handler; a hunting standard is not a timed exercise prescription.

Coat and everyday care

Brush the harsh black-and-white coat and dense undercoat, increasing sessions during shedding; examine pads and skin after woodland work.

Challenges to plan for

The FCI notes strong game interest and possible territorial behaviour toward other males. Carefully assess compatibility rather than expecting dog-park sociability.

How does it compare?

The Jamthund also hunts large game, but is a larger grey spitz with a different national development.

Questions to ask a breeder

How do the parents behave with unfamiliar dogs and wildlife scent? Explain working expectations, health screening and early handling and socialisation of puppies.
