Who is this breed suited to?
This large Turkish flock guardian belongs with someone prepared for independent decisions, secure territory and planned introductions. A spacious property still needs active human management.
Daily time commitment
RKC suggests more than two hours of adult exercise daily. Discuss how walks and supervised livestock activity fit the individual, adding handling and boundary checks.
Coat and everyday care
Brush the short protective coat several times weekly, increasing attention when loose undercoat accumulates. Teach the dog to accept examinations before adult size complicates them.
Challenges to plan for
Wariness of unfamiliar people and guarding history require predictable visitor procedures. A guardian cannot be expected to interpret every delivery or neighbouring animal unaided.
How does it compare?
The Akbash is another Turkish livestock guardian to research. Coat colour alone is less useful than comparing ancestry, adult behaviour and the work each line performs.
Questions to ask a breeder
Are these adults livestock guardians or household companions? How are puppies introduced to stock and visitors, and what fencing and parental health records can you show?
