alternatively spelled Coochi and Koochee in English

Who is this breed suited to?

The Afghan Shepherd, or Kuchi dog, is associated with guarding nomadic livestock and caravans. A prospective owner needs experience with large guardian dogs and a setting in which boundaries, visitors and livestock can be managed deliberately.

Daily time commitment

A single verified daily exercise allowance is not available for this variable working population. Before taking a dog, observe the particular adults' routine and budget for supervised activity, handling practice and daily boundary checks as well as feeding and company.

Coat and everyday care

Coat, size and working conditions vary among Kuchi dogs. Have the seller demonstrate the grooming of the actual parents and inspect the prospective dog's feet, coat and overall condition with veterinary support.

Challenges to plan for

The name does not establish one uniform companion-dog temperament. Guarding responses and differences between lines make assessment of the individual and its upbringing especially important; photographs alone are a poor basis for selecting one.

How does it compare?

The Central Asian Shepherd is a relevant guardian comparison, but a Kuchi dog should not automatically be treated as a registered example of that breed. Ask what ancestry and registration, if any, can actually be documented.

Questions to ask a breeder

Where did this line originate, and what work do its adults do? Can I meet them safely and see their response to routine handling? What records support the dog's identity, health history and suitability for my setting?
