A smooth-coated cousin of the Istrian Coarse-haired Hound, bred for the same hare and fox hunting.

Who is this breed suited to?

The Istrian Shorthaired Hound suits an active scent-hound home able to provide controlled exploration and realistic management of wildlife interests.

Daily time commitment

Reserve daily time for sniffing walks, recall and conditioning. Its suitability for rocky terrain does not remove the need to build fitness.

Coat and everyday care

Brush the close dense coat and inspect skin and feet after rough outings; include the hanging ears in gentle routine checks.

Challenges to plan for

The FCI describes a strong voice and some reserve with strangers. Ask about the individual dog's responses rather than assuming every hound welcomes everyone.

How does it compare?

The coarse-haired Istrian is another Croatian hound with similar hunting tasks, but its rough furnishings need considerably more clearing after cover.

Questions to ask a breeder

What terrain and quarry do the parents work? How do they respond to visitors, and what documented health and home-socialisation experience accompany puppies?
