What to know before you buy

Before you buy, check your local zoning and municipal ordinances — many suburban and even some rural residential areas restrict or ban keeping livestock, and the rules differ block by block in some counties. Ask about space and shelter requirements too: goats and sheep need companionship (never keep just one), a covered shelter, and secure fencing, while poultry setups need predator-proof housing appropriate for your climate.

For any animal you're buying to breed or show, ask for health records and, where applicable, registration papers up front; for goats and sheep specifically, ask about recent CAE, CL, and Johne's disease testing, which responsible breeders test for routinely given how easily these spread within a herd. For horses, ask for a recent Coggins test (required for interstate transport in most states) along with a vet's soundness assessment if you're buying for riding or work.

As with any listing, look for the seller verification badge, arrange to see the animal in person before paying, and never wire money to a seller you haven't spoken with directly by phone or video call.
